How We Helped an Accounts Senior Secure a Management Role (And £20,000 Pay Rise) With a UK Top 40 Firm

Introduction

In March 2025, we helped a brilliant Accounts candidate take a step-up in their career, not just in terms of salary or company reputation (joining a top 40 firm), but also in terms of responsibility level. They went from working as an Accounts Senior at a smaller independent practice to a Manager with a top 40 firm who are rapidly growing, and in doing so, receive a £20,000 pay rise (+57%).

One of the reasons that this is one of our favourite placements of the year is not just because of the points mentioned above, but also because the candidate had initially applied for a non-management role… But we thought they could do more!

The Role

Preparing year end accounts for sole traders, limited companies and partnershipsPreparing self-assessmentsPreparing and submitting VAT returnsCorporate Tax returnsPreparing management accounts (training can be provided)Advising clients on a range of accounting and tax mattersTraining and supervising junior members of staffAd-hoc accounts tasks as and when required

ACA/ACCA study support provided.

A key part of this role is building and maintaining strong client relationships and ensuring high levels of service is delivered at all times, so strong communication skills is a must!

Candidate Journey

The candidate had initially applied for an Accounts Semi Senior role… Very different to an Accounts Manager role, right?

Absolutely! And this case study serves as a perfect example of the way we work and the results we achieve. It’s about understanding each candidate, their experience, goals, and capabilities.

We started by having two in-depth calls with the candidate – the first over the telephone and the second over MS Teams, which lasted around an hour.  At the end of the call, we put together a plan of action and then got to work, speaking to the clients within our immediate network and arranging some interviews.

Within two weeks the candidate received two offers, one for £15,000 more than their current salary at the time, and the other £20,000 more and with increased responsibility, providing the candidate with an opportunity to truly grow and take not just one step forward, but two or three. 

The rest is history, and everyone involved won. The candidate secured an amazing role, the employer recruited a brilliant candidate that will add tons of value both now and in the future, and we were able to make it happen.
